Thursday - castles and crofts

We decided to visit Castletown, but took a detour on the way to see the magnetic hill. Not really magnetic, but an optical illusion where it looks like you are going up hill, infact gravity takes over to pull the car 'uphill'. We weren't totally convinced because you had to go downhill before travelling uphill so momentum took over.

After the excitement of the magnetic hill we drove onto Castletown. Originally the ancient capital of the island. The town is full of old charm, with a mix of old and new. We went into Castle Rushen, free entry with our national trust cards, to explore. This castle is very well preserved and showed rooms decorated with hangings and floor coverings to give an idea of how it would be in the time of it's occupation. We were also able to walk the castle walls and were even able to climb to the very top of the tower which granted us superb views all across the south of the island. It was well worth the visit.

A spot of lunch at a lovely cafe in the town and we were refuelled and ready to head off to see the sound and Calf of Man. We drove past Port St. Mary, but with not much to see, didn't stop. It was raining heavily by the time we arrived at the sound so parking the car to afford us views of the Calf of Man, we sat in the car and took in the beauty. Retracing our steps along the road we stumbled across Cregneash village. This is a folk museum, showing traditional ways of living and crafts. We watched traditional knitting and quilting, then up to the farm to see pigs and chicks. We were delighted, after nearly a week on the island, to finally see a Manx cat. She was so friendly.

Popping in for a cupa with Brian's Aunty Maureen and Brian, finished off our visit to this area of the island. By now it was nearly 6pm so we drove back to Douglas to see if we could catch some more of the grand prix practice races. We were lucky this time to see the beginning of the races. The best being the classic bikes. We really enjoyed watching the races this time.

We finished the evening off with fish and chips on Douglas sea front. Yummy.
